Interview Advice

The idea behind the interview process is to enable employers to identify prospective candidates for their job openings while helping job seekers the opportunity to get a better understanding of what the company and position is all about.

The following are some tips to keep in mind in order to get the most from interviews, whether they may be pre-screening telephone interviews, or a face-to-face interview.

  1. Be prepared - even over-prepared! Plan your strategy.
  2. Be clear on what you know and what you want to achieve.
  3. Be honest - always the best policy. Make sure your responses match your claims (such as qualifications, achievements), and if you've been forthright about it, understand the justification perhaps... but keep the bitterness aside!
  4. Be clear about your strengths - sell yourself! Emphasise those that relate specifically to the position.
  5. Be clear where you want to go - what is your gameplan for yourself, for your future employer?
  6. Have clear personal standards. i.e. "I don't take on projects unless I can give them 100% dedication."
  7. Interview the interviewer - again, knowing what you want and what you'd be willing to settle for and if position meets your requirements.
  8. Don't allow the salary issue be the main concern in the interview! Know the range of compensation for the job you're seeking, make your own realistic determination of what you're worth, and then be prepared to stand on fair, common ground.

Good luck, and remember - always go in it to win it!
